Eduardo Nunez Wins By Stoppage Over Miguel Marriaga
In this latest tour of duty, super featherweight fighter Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez (27-1, 27 KO’s) grinded Miguel “The Scorpion” Marriaga (37-2, 26 KO’s) down to a sixth knockout stoppage.
Somewhat surprisingly, the heavy-handed Nunez would begin the bout in remarkably subdued fashion and allowed Marriaga free reign to control the pace. The action would heat up greatly in the second period when Sugar’s offense thawed out and he began pursuing Marriaga with gusto. He even managed to wobble Marriaga in the closing moments with a crackling right hook.
Later, in the fourth Nunez nearly knocked The Scorpion out of the ring with the same right hook. By this point, it was clear that, while game and putting forth a great effort, Marriaga was on borrowed time. Then, in the closing moments of the sixth round, Sugar blasted Marriaga with a deflating left hook to the body that resulted in a late-reaction knee being taken.
To his credit, Marriaga found his feet and made it to the corner. There, upon the advice of his corner, referee Jerry Cantu waved it off, awarding the win to Nunez.
