Sunny Edwards Still Pushing for Julio Cesar Martinez Unification
IBF flyweight champion “Showtime” Sunny Edwards (19-0, 4KO) continues to apply pressure on WBC champion “El Rey” Julio Cesar Martinez (19-2, 14KO). Showtime has been chasing a unification fight with Martinez since winning the title from Moruti Mthalane in 2021. His recent social media post accuses Martinez’s training team of keeping the champ away from him.
Edwards is considered the best fighter in the division. Furthermore, he is a social media hawk, so when fans asked about a fight with Martinez, his reply was epic.
This is not the first time Showtime has accused someone of helping the WBC champion. On December 3, El Rey, in a bounce-back fight, was gifted a decision against Samuel Carmona as two judge’s scorecards were grossly biased.
THIS FIGHT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN 2023
The Mexican champion was thoroughly out-boxed, despite Carmona suffering a hand injury. Several fans and pundits wondered if the beating he took from multi-divisional champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez prior took something out of him.
Edwards couldn’t help himself and quickly called out Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn for protecting Martinez. In his last outing, the IBF champion successfully defended the title for a third time against former champion Felix Alvarado on November 11.
In 2023, the boxing community is hoping this fight takes place as both champions are free at the moment. The flyweight division needs someone to step out as the leader of the pack.
