Stanionis Targeting Ennis As His Next Opponent
WBA regular welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KO’s) is looking to establish himself as a prime player in the division. He was hoping to further this agenda by toppling the highly-touted Vergil Ortiz Jr. Sadly for both men, that cursed duel was canceled for the third consecutive time due to Ortiz suffering last minute health issues. Now, as Stanionis told Fight Hype, he’d happily test his mettle in a showdown with dangerous interim IBF 147-pound champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28 KO’s).
“I will fight anybody, I want to fight. I just want a good dance partner and a fight. It doesn’t matter to me…he’s [Ennis] the guy now. He showed everything, his value, his skills, yes, he is the guy now.
“He’s coming with the new generation, he’s [becoming] a superstar and he deserves it. But they asked in 2019 or 2020 they asked me to fight him and I said yes, twice.”
Eimantas Stanionis – WBA Regular Champion
TOWN AIN’T BIG ENOUGH FOR TWO OF US
There is no question that Boots is one of more capable bulls in the division. Two fights ago, some questioned if Ennis was as advertised when he went the distance with Karen Chukhadzhian. However, the maniacal and systematic thrashing he tossed on Roiman Villa in his last fight firmly renewed those doubters faith. Luckily, like Stanionis, the Philly pugilist is openly seeking any and all serious challenges. Ennis even previously mentioned his own willingness to face the Lithuanian.
Only time will tell if they mix it up in the ring, but this feels like a strong possibility. Each is looking to prove themselves even further. They both have publicly stated they want another fight this year. Both have said they want each other, so why not?!
Yet, for now, we’ll have to kick back and watch how these turbulent boxing politics unfold. Keep close to 3Kings Boxing to stay on top of all the latest boxing news and hubbub.
