Jaron Ennis or Roiman Villa Could Challenge the Spence vs Crawford Winner
Stakes are high in the upcoming IBF Interim titlist Jaron “Boots” Ennis (30-0, 27KO) vs Roiman Villa (26-1, 24KO) fight. The winner opens up a potential path to challenge for undisputed honors.
Ennis was supposed to fight Villa on the undercard of multi-divisional champion Gervonta Davis’ battle against Ryan Garcia on April 22. It seems the two will now get it on as the main event of the upcoming Showtime boxing card scheduled for August 8. Villa shocked the boxing world by defeating Rashidi Ellis on the same card that saw Ennis win the Interim title over Karen Chukhadzhian on January 8.
The Venezuelan’s victory derailed any plans that were being put in motion to set up an Ennis versus Ellis showdown. In addition, Villa shot up to the top of the rankings.
SERIOUS TITLE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE WINNER
The winner between the Philly hopeful and Villa could find themselves either fighting for the undisputed crown. The undisputed showdown with unified champion Errol Spence Jr and WBO champion Terence “Bud” Crawford is set to take place on July 29. In addition, both fighters have a rematch clause in place, which could keep them busy until 2024.
The Spence vs Crawford winner could vacate the titles to move up to junior middleweight. The IBF would likely then elevate whoever holds the Interim title to full champion. Another possible scenario is that the undisputed welterweight champion could fight the winner of Ennis-Villa.
With the possibility of becoming a world champion at stake, fans can expect both fighters to bring their A-game.
