Jaron Ennis Pursuing IBF Mandatory Slot for Errol Spence Fight!
Top welterweight contender Jaron “Boots” Ennis (29-0, 27KO) is eager to get his shot at a title. He could get the opportunity after petitioning the IBF to mandate a fight with unified champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-0, 22KO).
The boxing community is still trying to get over the cancellation of the undisputed welterweight fight between The Truth and WBO champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (38-0, 29KO). Furthermore, boxing fans believe the unified champion may move up after his cryptic post on social media.
Ennis’ trainer/father, Derek “Bozy” Ennis, stated they had petitioned the IBF to order the mandatory defense. Boots is viewed by many as a serious threat to both Spence and Crawford.
ENNIS PREFERS TO FIGHT SPENCE FOR THE TITLE
In an interview with YSM Sports Media, Ennis expressed wanting to fight Spence for the title but is willing to fight whoever is on his path to becoming a world champion.
“We need it, we want it and we gone take it. That IBF belt is coming home soon, whether they like it or not […] I would love to fight Errol Spence. He’s a great name, great fighter. Who doesn’t want to be great against a fighter like that and take his belt?”
“That’s what I want to do – take the belt from him, but if he vacates the belt and I gotta fight somebody else, it don’t really matter. I just want my shot. I want to get that world title.”
Ennis has had to fight against the stigma in boxing of being labeled a high-risk/low-reward opponent. He isn’t buying that and believes it’s just an excuse.
“I mean, it ain’t no [high-risk/low-reward] thing . . . they using that as an excuse the money is there, everything is there. I feel like they using that [high-risk/low-reward] for an excuse.”
