Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr Rematch Postponed Over Injury
Boxing fans have received bad news as the anticipated middleweight rematch between former WBO junior middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (32-3-1, 19KO) and Chris Eubank Jr (32-2, 23KO) has been postponed. Moreover, Eubank Jr could have a better chance of victory with Smith coming off an injury.
According to ESPN, Smith suffered an injury while training for the June 17 rematch. The former world champion shocked the boxing community with a fourth-round stoppage in front of a roaring crowd at Manchester Arena on January 21.
After activating the rematch clause, it was touch-and-go on if the fight was going to happen. Rumors surfaced that Eubank Jr was possibly looking to revisit the fight with Conor Benn.
Boxing fans were pleased to hear Eubank decided to seek redemption with the rematch. Furthermore, he continues to feel the stoppage was premature, but his belief that he is the better fighter remains rock solid.
In the build-up to their first fight, Smith felt that retirement was right around the corner, if defeated. Well, his career seems to have been revitalized. He claims fans can expect to see the same results in the rematch.
WHEN WILL THE REMATCH TAKE PLACE?
As of the writing of this article, it is unknown when the rematch will be rescheduled to take place. Depending on the type of injury Beefy has suffered, the fight could be pushed back for about six to eight weeks.
It’s worth mentioning Eubank could have the upper hand going into the rematch, with Liam Smith coming off an injury. At 34 years old, Smith’s body may carry a lingering effect from the injury. With both men promising a victory, something like this can be the deciding factor on who wins or losses.
