WBC Says Eubank Jr. vs Benn Could Determine Canelo’s Next Foe
The major world sanctioning bodies have a habit of making decisions that leave fans and pundits alike shaking their collective heads. The latest is WBC’s announcement that the winner of the April 26 fight between Chris Eubank Jr. (34-3, 25 KOs) and Conor Benn (23-0, 14 KOs) would be eligible to face reigning unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs).
Neither Eubank Jr. nor Benn has done enough to earn such an honor. However, during an interview with Sky Sports, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said the following:
“Both are ranked, have been highly ranked for many years and are top level in the sport. A fight for the championship is doable.”
Eubank Jr. has done nothing substantive at 168. Benn has been a career welterweight who is fighting his arch-rival at a catchweight of 160. To any astute observer of the sport, Sulaiman’s words are ridiculous.
