Eubank Jr talks training with Roy Jones
Middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr (29-2, 22KOs) has been in the United States for the last two and a half months training with future Hall Of Famer and All time great Roy Jones Jr.
Looking to get back into title contention, the younger Eubank has been putting in work with the legendary boxer as he’s seeking to improve his game.
Speaking to iFL TV, Eubank Jr shared his experience being trained by Jones.
ON IF JONES WILL A PERMANENT FIGURE IN HIS TRAINING TEAM?
“That’s what it’s looking like, yeah. I mean this guy’s a genius man, like he really is. I’m actually upset that I only met him now you know. if I would’ve met him at 20 instead of 30, you know, it would’ve been crazy. But I’ve got him now, I’m still in my prime, I’m still ready to learn and apply the things he’s teaching me. He is a genius, he is a master and one thing that really struck me once I started to get into the swing of things out here is how hands-on he is […] I thought I’d go there, walk into the gym, Roy Jones he’s got all these guys here, alright hit the bag for five minutes.
I didn’t think he’d spend the time because he’s Roy Jones Jr. He doesn’t have to be doing this. You know I thought he had like a whole thing going on, and that he just wouldn’t spend much time. But he’s on me every single day. For the few hours that I’m in the gym, he’s on me the whole time giving me all his knowledge, telling me everything I need to know, everything I need to do. He is a trainer in truest sense of the word, more than I’ve ever experienced with anybody else. I’m learning a lot every week. You know, he’ll just say something or do something or show me something and I’ll be like ‘wow, why didn’t I think of that or why haven’t been doing that’. So yeah I’m pretty sure me and Roy are going to be working together for the foreseeable future.”
Supremely gifted athletically, Eubank Jr sought the help of Jones to improve his technical ability and ring IQ, which have been his downfall in his career. It’ll be interesting to see how the pair fares once Eubank steps back into the ring.
