Will Tevin Farmer vs Gervonta Davis be Next?
For quite a bit of time, IBF super featherweight champion Tevin “American Idol” Farmer and WBA super champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis have nurtured a rather visible rivalry. For years the two have wolfed back and forth at one another via social media, through their promotional companies and even face-to-face.
At different times, it seemed as if the potential unification grudge match was mere inches away from becoming a reality. However, the appetizing prizefight has not come to fruition…yet!
A Call to Action
On July 27, the American Idol and Tank both enjoyed successful outings in the ring. Farmer won via a twelve-round unanimous decision by utilizing his quick reflexes and awe-inspiring defensive prowess.
Tank won by blistering TKO. Davis’ first round was somewhat even. However, in the next round, he caught up with his game foe and clipped him with his impressive, crunching punching power. During their individual post-fight interviews, each man took the time to call the other out.
On the surface, this came off as just more of the same. However, neither seem to be backing off the call out.
Most recently, Farmer took to his Instagram page to once again double down on his intention to face Davis. The post is of a would-be promotional poster to hype up a potential bout between the two. In the caption Farmer wrote:
“Lets not keep fooling and lying to the fans. Let’s make the fight happen next. Please let’s do it before the year is out NOV/DEC. I’m ready to settle all the debates!”
Setting the Stage
One of the biggest knocks against Tank Davis is that he has an exceptionally thin resume when it comes to his level of opposition. Even his win over Ricardo Nunez, regardless of how sensational it may have been, has been somewhat minimized because very few people knew much of anything about Nunez.
Countless individuals throughout the boxing industry think it is definitely time for Tank to step it up. This would be the perfect foil for such a move.
While Farmer has not been accused (as much) of fighting only lackluster competition, he would also benefit from a showdown with Davis. The IBF champion has very little confidence that he would be able to secure a unification bout with fellow champs Miguel Berchelt or Jamal Herring.
Hell, before his last bout with Guillaume Frenois, Farmer was extremely pessimistic about a showdown with Davis! The American Idol has openly stated this belief several times in various interviews.
If he could not entice any of the other three belt holders into a bout, Farmer would love to get Joseph “Jo-Jo” Diaz in the ring. Like Davis, Farmer and Diaz have engaged in a very public rivalry.
Prior to his match with Frenois, Farmer speculated that Jo-Jo would be his next bout. Although he is not a champion, Diaz is a strong, tough boxer and would present a difficult challenge. However, if he was given the choice, there is little doubt that the American Idol would select Davis over Diaz.
Therefore, even though we have been down this road several times before, let’s keep our fingers crossed that now is the time that Farmer and Davis actually collide.
3kingsboxing will continue to provide coverage on this appealing potential prizefight.
