Felix Verdejo Stops Will Madera in One Round
In main event of Top Rank Promotion’s ESPN telecast, lightweight contender Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo (27-1, 17 KO’s) obliterated Will Madera (15-1-3, 8 KO’s) in the first round.
El Diamante was aiming to slather a little more luster on his name and he did just that!
Following a mid-2016 motorcycle accident and a March 2018 loss to Antonio Torres, many wondered what the former Olympian had left to offer. Verdejo showed in crushing fashion that he has many more sensational performances to give.
The fight began in very pedestrian fashion. El Diamante opened up very mindfully behind his jab. For the first two minutes, the action was dedicated solely to feeling one another out. This until Verdejo seriously hurt Madera with a right uppercut.
With his opponent hurt, he battered Madera into the corner where he dropped him in a crumpled heap. When Madera went down he landed awkwardly on his right leg.
He didn’t come anywhere near beating the count.
During his post-fighter interview, a very calm and poised Verdejo called out unified lightweight champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO’s).
There is some animosity here as Hi-Tech is responsible for putting Verdejo out of the 2012 Olympics.
