Fielding earns possible title shot
Rocky Fielding (26-1, 14KO’s) appears to have moved to the front of the queue to face WBO Super Middleweight World Champion,Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (37-0, 25KO’s) over in America later in the year.
Fielding was successful, albeit in a lacklustre performance overKarel Horesjek (11-8-3). The fight going the full eight rounds and Fielding triumphing 79-74. Although it has to be said that Fielding didnt look fit in my opinion.
However, following this victory it appears that promoter Eddie Hearn is on the cusp of securing his man a world title fight.
“We’ve been in talks this week. It looks like it will take place in June, we are just working on the deal now, it’s quite close,” Hearn confirmed to Sky Sports.
“Fielding has worked his way up the rankings and earned his shot.
“It’s a very difficult fight and Ramirez could be the best of the bunch at 168lbs, but you have to take these opportunities, Rocky needs to jump into a big fight.”
“The match-up would likely take place stateside and as long as the deal is right, we will accept the fight. Hopefully, it will be concluded in the next week or two.” he said.
Whilst WBA ‘Super’ Champion,George Grovesis the #1 ranked Super Middleweight in the world, it is thought by many that it is Ramirez who is the future of the division. With most of the other titles held up by either the WBSS final or a potential rematch for the IBF title betweenCaleb TruaxandJames DeGalestrongly rumoured. It seems Fielding will be the second opponent for Ramirez this year after he stoppedHabib Ahmedin six rounds earlier this year.
