Floyd Schofield Wants To Fight Tank But Needs To Beat Giron First

On November 2, lightweight contender Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (17-0, 12 KOs) fights Rene Tellez Giron (20-3, 13 KO). However, he wishes it was WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28KOs).

Davis is set to face WBA junior lightweight champion Lamont Roach. Schofield spoke on the matter in a brief Q&A with Fight Hub TV.

“In my opinion, I am not scared of nobody, I don’t think nobody fears him [Tank] or these other fighters. So, it’s only safe to say, in my opinion, I should have got the fight before Lamont Roach but that is my opinion. But if we get through Rene – we’re not overlooking Rene – we will see what Golden Boy has next. And who knows; if next year the opportunity presents itself, we’ll be more than ready.”

SHOW AND PROVE

Without question, Schofield has shown to have the skillset and has made some noise in the division. The trouble is he has yet to prove to be ready for the next level. In performances like the one against Esteuri Suero, Kid Austin displayed several rookie flaws in an overall dominant win. Until now, the biggest amount of attention he’s garnered is due to the very vocal and somewhat controversial father and chief second, Floyd Schofield Sr.

In terms of being more deserving of a Tank fight, Kid Austin appears to be having wishful thinking than logic. The Texan is ranked #2 (WBA) and #14 (IBF). But, Roach’s performance in his last outing is why team Davis made the call. From this lens, it’s not hard to understand why a champion was given precedence over a contender.

Nevertheless, provided that he puts in a solid enough performance, perhaps Schofield can make a better argument for a fight versus Tank. One the fastest ways to get beat is focusing on a fighter outside of your current opponent . So let’s see how Schofield handles himself against Giron to find out if this tough talk is still warranted or just much ado about nothing.
