Jack Catterall Wants Big Fights with Champions at 140
One-time junior welterweight title challenger Jack “El Gato” Catterall (27-1, 13KO) is eager to step into the ring with unified lightweight champion Devin Haney (30-0, 15KO), WBC champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (29-1, 24KO), and WBO champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (19-1, 13KO).
Boxing fans may recall a time when El Gato and Rougarou were on the verge of a bout, but it never came to fruition. Nonetheless, Catterall still has his sights set on that fight, as well as showdowns with Haney and Lopez.
In an interview with Boxing UK, the British fighter expressed his desire for these marquee matchups but emphasized that sitting around waiting is not an option.
“I’ve been vocal about it. I want the big fights. I want Prograis, Haney, and Lopez. But, at the moment, the offers aren’t on the table for them. I’m not going to just sit around and wait.”
Catterall’s proactive approach is commendable, especially considering that the fighters he mentioned are either tied up with other commitments or rumored to be in significant bouts.
The Dream and Prograis will square off on December 9, and their recent press conference set social media on fire. The Takeover might be heading into a matchup with top contender Ryan Garcia.
Moreover, Catterall is not currently within close reach of a title shot, as he is ranked #5 by the WBC and WBO, and #7 by the WBA and IBF. To position himself closer to a title opportunity, the Brit needs to take care of business against the multi-divisional champion Jorge Linares on October 21.
