Fury weighs in on Joshua race comments
Unified heavyweight champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua (23-1, 21KOs) recently came under intense criticism stemming from comments he made at a Black Lives Matter rally. Joshua encouraged black people to invest in their own communities and not give their money to white establishments.
This caused major backlash among some British supporters.
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (30-0-1, 23KOs) has weighed in telling Michelle Joy Phelps of Behind The Gloves that if it was he who uttered those words, he would be “crucified”.
FURY WEIGHS IN!
“I saw the video, listen everyone does what they got to do. I’m sure A.J got his reasons to say what he said, his concerns are none of my business, that’s his own opinions. I’m sure everyone has their own opinions on every single thing, no one agrees on a certain single thing. Whatever his reasons were, he’s done it, it’s in the past, he’s moved on. I’m sure he’s apologized if he’s offended anybody.
Oh he actually didn’t did he? He actually said if you didn’t like what he said go fuck yourself? So yeah, no apology necessary.
But let’s just say I’m not pushing knives in or kicking anybody while they’re down. But if it would’ve been me that said it, don’t shop in any black owned stores, or Asian owned stores and don’t buy from their businesses, then I’d have been crucified like Jesus Christ. Let’s just say that. Good thing it wasn’t me, it never would be me because to me color doesn’t exist because I have the most diverse team in boxing.”
Obviously with tensions running high due to the ongoing battle of police brutality and inequality among African Americans, it’s clear that it’s a touchy subject for many. Does Fury have a valid point? Depends on which end of the spectrum you’re standing on.
Obviously if he made those comments, he would to be under major criticism for the perceived inflammatory comments, just as Joshua has been.
One thing that is clear is that this subject will not die down anytime soon.
