Tyson Fury In Denial About his Inferiority to Oleksandr Usyk

Sometimes, a fighter has to realize that another fighter may have their number. Such should be the case with former WBC champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs). Through two fights with the reigning unified heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs), it’s clear that Fury is the inferior fighter, despite his feelings toward the contrary.

The two fighters engaged in a spirited rematch on December 21 in Saudi Arabia. Usyk got the verdict by a unanimous decision. An exasperated Fury couldn’t contain his frustration during the post-fight interview with the boxing press.

“I think he (Uysk) got a little Christmas gift from them judges. Christmas gift early . . . It’s boxing, and it happens. There’s no doubt in my mind I won the fight.”

To Fury’s credit, he fought well in spots. In the middle rounds, the big man from Great Britain had his most successful moments of the fight. However, it was Usyk who was more active and the effective aggressor. Many fight observers on boxing message boards and social media felt that Usyk did enough to win.

HAVING NO ANSWERS

In their first battle in May 2024, Fury played the role of boxer. After having early success, Usyk rallied over the second half of the fight to win by split decision. Fury switched his tactics in their second battle only to get defeated.

The Gypsy King is unbowed, feeling that he won both matches with Usyk. Unfortunately, the former champion sounds like a fighter in denial. Fury is arguably the most unique heavyweight in boxing history. Standing 6’9”, he can box and has outstanding athleticism and coordination for a man his size.

It must eat at the spirit of Fury. He previously got over on opponents by what he could do in the ring and using his quick wit and ability to trash-talk to win the game of psychological warfare. None of that works with the unified champion. It’s clear that in and out of the ring, Usyk is a fighter Fury can’t solve.
