Gabriela Fundora is One Fight With Esparza Out from Undisputed
The women’s flyweight division is on the cusp of crowning an undisputed champion, with unified champion Marlen Esparza (14-1, 1KO) and IBF champion Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora (12-0, 5KO) at the forefront.
On October 21, Sweet Poison delivered a sensational performance to claim the IBF title from Arely Mucino. She effectively utilized her height and reach advantage, employing a sharp jab and a counter left hand before securing a fifth-round stoppage.
In her post-fight interview, Fundora remained non-committal when asked about her next steps.
“Enjoy this belt, enjoy the victory with my loved ones and my family, and take each step as we go.”
The logical next step should be an undisputed title clash with Esparza, who narrowly won a decision against WBO champion Gabriela Alaniz on July 8. Esparza currently holds the other three major belts, with champions Ibeth Zamora Silva (WBC) and Naoko Fujioka (WBA) among her recent victims.
WHEN IT COMES TO PREDICTING THE OUTCOME
When assessing the potential showdown, Fundora emerges as the obvious choice. She possesses youth, speed, height, reach, and impressive boxing skills.
However, Esparza brings valuable experience in big fights against top-tier competition, a factor that could work in her favor. Her defensive skills have notably improved, and she’s adept at fighting from the back foot.
Golden Boy Promotions deserves commendation for collaborating with Fundora’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, in facilitating the Mucino fight. The question remains whether they are willing to do it again. The pursuit of an undisputed champion should be the top priority as we enter 2024.
