Gervonta Davis and Yuriorkis Gamboa possible for the winter!
According to sources close to the camp of Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-2, 18KO), terms have been reached to face former WBA super world junior lightweight champion Gervonta Davis (22-0, 21KO) in the winter.
A date nor a venue has yet to be confirmed, however, the target is to have the bout in December or January.
This is not much of a surprise as both men fought on the same card in July where talks of this match-up spawned.
On the under-card, Gamboa would take out former three-time WBO champion Roman Martinez in two rounds. Meanwhile, Davis would destroy his mandatory Ricardo Nunez in the same amount of time in front of his hometown crowd for his third title defense.
Almost immediately, it was announced the two would face each other next!
He’s Not The Fighter He Used to Be
It’s been a while since the 37 year-old Cuban was the threat he used to be when he was at two-time featherweight champion. The guy was literally a boogeyman in the sport before losing to arguably the current #1 pound-for-pound fighter Terence Crawford in 2014.
Since then, he had a major setback in a knockout loss to huge underdog and journeyman Robinson Castellanos in 2017. He followed with two terrible outings, but wins against the unknown Alexis Reyes and former WBA champion Jason Sosa; the majority of fans feeling he lost the latter bout.
Regardless, Gamboa is will still be the best opponent the the Floyd Mayweather protege will face.
Preparing For a New Division
Davis was recently in heavy negotiations to consider a unification match-up with IBF junior lightweight champion Tevin Farmer. However in a sudden move succeeding Vasiliy Lomachenko’s win over Luke Campbell, he announced his move to the lightweight division.
Immediately hardcore fans speculated Gamboa would be the next move and it looks like they were correct!
