Gamboa Escapes With A Controversial Majority Decision

Gamboa Wins Controversial MD

In a fight most considered to be a crossroads fight Cuba’s Yuriokis Gamboa escaped with a majority decision victory over Jason Sosa, the judges scorecards 94-94, 95-93 and 96-92 in favor of Gamboa. Taking a fight on 3 weeks noticed with a new trainer can be a recipe for disaster. Gamboa was able to gut it out and get a majority decision over a game Sosa. Gamboa came out more conservative than usual with Sosa pressing the action forward throughout the fight. He was clearly the faster of the two relying on his movement and counter punching abilities to outbox Sosa. As soon as they got on the inside Gamboa would hold receiving several warnings early on.

By the middle rounds it seem like Gamboa tired moving less and getting hit more. Sosa was not discourage and kept coming forward, pressing the action trying to make it an ugly fight. By the 7th round Sosa caught Gamboa with a shot that would drive him off balance and his gloves touched the canvas for a knockdown. In the 10th and final round Gamboa was deducted a point for holding.
It was a close fight that went back and forth, it will be interesting to see what Gamboa can do with his new trainer and full camp. For Jason Sosa must go back to the drawing board after suffering his second loss in a road. Both fighters showed a lot grit and gutted it out.
