Gamboa Looking To Become Champion Again!
There is no secret that the greater bulk of the boxing world feels that Yuriorkis “El Ciclon” Gamboa (30-2, 19 KO’s) is little more than food for Gervonta “Tank” Davis (22-0, 21 KO’s).
The two will lock horns December 28 in Atlanta, GA for the vacant WBA world lightweight title. The bout will air on SHOWTIME at 9:00 PM ET.
DEAD IN THE WEEDS OR DEADLY SNAKE IN THE GRASS?
Despite his immense skill and formidable weapons, Gamboa is being massively overlooked like a dwarf in a slam dunk contest. Sure his heart and courage are being praised but his chances at victory have been sneered and chuckled at relentlessly.
At age 38, with twelve years in as a professional, few are confident in his ability to overcome Tank.
While the Cuban is well aware of the naysayers, he puts zero significant merit into those draining sentiments. El Ciclon has been able to remain calm behind enemy lines whilst persistently keeping focused on his goal of capturing the vacant belt.
In fact, Gamboa is hopeful that the young and ambitous Davis is taking him lightly. He expresses this in an interview with FightHype.
“Definitely, I know that is something that they are really hanging their hat on. They’re hanging their hat on the fact that I’m an older fighter, but we will see on December 28.
“Obviously it’s something that’s going to be a great moment in my career. It’s going to be a career defining moment, something that I’ve asked for my whole life, my whole career, professional career and I’m going to make the best of it.”
AGAINST ALL ODDS
If Gamboa were to do the unthinkable and best Davis in twelve rounds or less, it would certainly shake up the division. Not to mention slap a very untimely flat tire on the top rated performance vehicle that has been Tank’s professional career.
Granted El Ciclon did buck the odds, for the time being, lucrative and popular fights like Vasiliy Lomanchenko and Teofimo Lopez would evaporate for Davis. At the very least, they would temporarily vanish.
Naturally, this is not a favorable outcome for Team Davis or The Money Team promotional outfit backing him.
What a turn of events that would be! Not only could Gamboa derail the substantial promotional push being placed behind Davis, he’d become a three-time, two-divisional world champion. Furthermore, a world champion with at least two big time fights at lightweight already set to go!
Yet, first things first, before he can claim all that would-be glory, he must first defeat his younger foe. And the odds are not in his favor.
3kingsboxing will continue to follow this pivotal prizefight.
