Gamboa & Golden Boy Split After Less Than Spectacular Year

Is Gamboa done?

Former Olympic Gold Medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa requested and was granted his release yesterday by Golden Boy Promotions.

When Gamboa signed with Golden Boy last January, there were huge expectations for him.

In his Golden Boy debut, Gamboa went up against Rene Alvarado in what turned out to be a lackluster performance by Gamboa, who was dropped in that fight, but ultimately went on to win a decision.

Golden Boy was positioning Gamboa for a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko for the summer of 2017, but those plans went down the drain after Gamboa was stopped by Robinson Castellanos. He was dropped twice in that fight before ultimately quitting. Killing any chance for a potential Lomachenko fight.

To sum it up Gamboa didn’t have a Golden run with Golden Boy, as all parties involved hoped for. He went 3-1 in 4 fights looking lackluster in each fight.

Now at 36 years of age and clearly past his prime, Gamboa will likely continue his career while risking becoming a gatekeeper.
