Ryan Garcia v Javier Fortuna showdown in July!

After knocking out former two-time WBC Lightweight title challenger Luke “Coolhands” Campbell (20-4, 16KOs) in January, the newly crowned WBC Interim Lightweight champion Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) will continue his rise in opposition. Next, he takes on former WBA Junior Lightweight champion Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (36-2-1, 25KOs). The bout is set for the month of July with the date and venue TBD.

Garcia, a rising star in boxing, overcame a second round knockdown against Campbell to rally and stop the former Olympic Gold Medalist in seven rounds. With the win, he became the Interim WBC Lightweight champion. Fortuna, will probably be an even tougher out for Garcia. His aggressive, come-forward style and power will pose problems for the taller yet inexperienced Garcia. Fortuna was last in the ring back in November of 2020. There, he would score a sixth-round stoppage over Antonio Lozada Torres.

The Garcia v Fortuna winner will face off against the winner of the May 29 Haney-Linares WBC Lightweight title fight. I must say it’s a great thing to see these young fighters finally putting their money where their mouths are and taking on these tough and needed fights.
