Abdul Wahid Next Fight Could Be Against Frank Martin

It appears that multi-divisional world champion Abdul “Tank” Wahid, formerly Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KOs), is on the verge of returning to the ring. But it’s against an opponent that some in the boxing community view as quite underwhelming.

Word on the street is that Wahid agreed to terms to defend the WBA lightweight against Texan Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12 KOs). According to ESPN, the match will happen either in the late spring or early summer on Amazon Prime pay-per-view.

Wahid has been out of action since a seventh-round stoppage over Ryan Garcia in April 2023. The 29-year-old was held in a Baltimore, Maryland detention center after violating the terms of his house arrest agreement. This all stems from his involvement in a November 2020 hit-and-run car crash which he entered a plea of guilty.

Martin is an undefeated lefty who resides out of Indianapolis, Indiana. His last outing was a twelve-round unanimous decision over Artem Harutyunyan in July 2023. The Ghost is ranked second by the WBA, fourth by the WBC and WBO, and ninth by the IBF at 135 pounds.

QUITE THE VISCERAL REACTION

Wahid’s return to the ring has been a hot topic on social media and boxing message boards. The thoughts are varied about Tank. Due to his exciting style and his mainstream drawing power, there’s a level of excitement that one of the sport’s biggest punchers is about to fight again.

However, several hardcore enthusiasts believe he’s been protected and has not fought elite competition. They want him to face opponents such as reigning WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson or reigning WBC junior welterweight champion Devin Haney.

In all fairness, Martin is far from a bum. He’s a skilled fighter with good power and the ability to give Wahid plenty of problems. But the reality is that Tank is one of the boxing’s true superstars. Any time he laces up the gloves, it’s big business. Wahid versus Martin is what’s upcoming; that’s the reality.
