Danny Garcia vs Terence Crawford?! Don’t hold your breath!
Two-division world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (36-2, 21KO) made his 2020 ring debut with an easy unanimous decision victory over Ivan Redkach (23-5-1, 18KO).
While holding the #1 ranking by the WBO, surely Garcia will be looking to take the strap from the organization’s champion Terence Crawford…right?
GETTING EXCITED RIGHT?
With the number one ranking comes a golden opportunity for Garcia to become a two-time welterweight champion.
The man that has shared the ring with hard-hitters such as Lucas Matthyssee, Keith Thurman, the ultra tough Shawn Porter, Hall Of Fame inductee Erik Morales and speedsters Amir Kahn and Zab Judah, would surely take on Crawford…right?!
Wrong!
LEAVING SOMEONE OUT?
Instead in his post fight interview, Garcia would callout WBC/IBF champ Errol Spence Jr and WBA champion Manny Pacquiao. He even threw former unified champion Keith Thurman’s name in there for a rematch!
Understandably, Garcia ranks second among the WBC and WBA rankings which puts him inline for Spence and Pacquiao. Also, a rematch with Thurman could be very lucrative as it was the first time around since the bout ended in a close decision.
However, he ranks the highest within the WBO and was given the opportunity to voice his eagerness to have the organization invoke him as the mandatory on a grand stage…and failed miserably! Even if he really didn’t want to fight Crawford, at the very least he should have mentioned his name!
Bob Arum has went public on more than one occasion to say he’s offered team Garcia a shot at Crawford, obviously with no success.
Conversely, Arum has also stated he is attempting to make Spence vs Crawford this year. Therefore, maybe there is some “inside information” that points to Crawford already being off the table for Garcia despite the ranking.
Nevertheless, the fight is just screaming to get made!
THE UNFORTUNATE TRUTH!
Unfortunately, the lack of acknowledgement of Crawford leaves me feeling that unless the WBO mandates the bout or an offer from Arum is made that Garcia cannot refuse, we’ll see yet another quality potential match-up go down the drain!
Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope the former WBC welterweight champion pushes for a title shot that is sitting right there within reach!
This…or Crawford shames the man who at one time would have jumped on the opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong by taking on the best and most dangerous fighters in his division.
