Angel Garcia on Keith Thurman Rematch: We’ll Take That
Trainer and father of former two-division world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (36-2, 21KOs), Angel Garcia has put his son’s former adversary Keith “One Time” Thurman (29-1, 22KOs) on notice for a potential rematch.
Garcia and Thurman waged battle in a unification bout in March of 2017. Thurman won a split decision to unify the WBA and WBC welterweight titles.
The elder Garcia, who was in attendance at the Adam Kownacki vs Robert Helenius fight, spoke to fighthype.com afterwards, where Thurman came up.
“Thurman messed up to0, he has a fucked up hand. We’ll take that, we’ll take the rematch with Thurman.”
With big fight opportunities currently scarce, Garcia may have to take yet another stay-busy type of fight. He’s coming over a one-sided unanimous decision win over Ivan Redkach (23-5-1, 18KOs) back on January 25.
With Thurman currently shelved again recovering from hand surgery and unified welterweight champion Errol Spence (26-0, 21KOs) currently looking towards either a potential unification clash with Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39KOs) or a tune-up fight after his horrendous car accident in October of 2019, that leaves Garcia in limbo.
There’s always a potential Shawn Porter (30-3-1, 17KOs) rematch, but Garcia clearly wants another world title opportunity and Porter, as good as he is and accomplished, he doesn’t currently present that opportunity.
It’ll be interesting to see who Danny Garcia finds himself in against later in the year.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
