Garcia Wins His Fourth Division Title

Garcia wins unanimous decision over Lipinets


In the main event from the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas, Sergey Lipinets (13-1,10KO’s) put his IBF Super Lightweight Title on the line against the challenger Mikey Garcia (38-0,30KO’s). The crowd was clearly there to see Garcia as the champion defended his belt in front of partisan crowd.

Both men started slow feeling each other out with Garcia using his jab in what was an uneventful round. Garcia increased his output in the second round and found a home for his lead right hand.

Lipinets came forward in the third and slipping a left hand, landed a counter left hook. However, Garcia took control of the remainder of the round behind his jab and lead right hand. In the fourth it was Lipinets having success early in the round and Garcia in the second half of the round.

Garcia started finding a home for his left in the fifth round while using his jab and movement as Lipinets was coming forward trying to walk Garcia down. Lipinets landing some nice counters often as Garcia kept landing his left during the sixth round.

Garcia landing his one, two all night with big time success in the fight. So it was no different in the seventh round until both men got into a great exchange, where Garcia landed a counter left hook that dropped Lipinets. In the eighth Garcia was picking his spots while Lipinets came forward landing some shots of his own, especially to the body.

Lipinets was able to catch Garcia going straight back and caught him with a left, right combination in round nine. Garcia was able to compose himself and continue to rely on his jab and right hand. Lipinets came forward as both men had their moments during the round. Garcia was able to land his straight and a big counter left hand in the tenth round.

Garcia started using his movement and picking his spots. To his credit Lipinets kept coming forward as Garcia landed a few counter left hooks in the eleventh round. In the final round it was Garcia landing some big shots early and then both men got into a nice exchange late in the round. In the end Garcia earned a unanimous decision (116-112,117-110 2x).

With the victory Mikey Garcia becomes the new IBF Super Lightweight Champion and has won four titles in four different divisions.
