Gary Antuanne Russell to Fight Edwin De Los Santos In June
If the current industry scuttlebutt proves to be true, then junior welterweight Gary Antuanne Russell (17-0, 17 KO’s) will face lightweight boxer Edwin De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KO’s) this June. Assuming this match comes to pass, then this would make for one exciting bout. While both competitors are very talented, neither have really established themselves enough to be recognizable by casual fans.
TO BE OR NOT TO BE?
Of the two, at the moment, De Los Santos may be the more recognizable of the pair but not for the best reasons. In his last contest, Santos tested his might against the boxing acumen of WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. Sadly for the Dominican bruiser, this turned out to be one of the most tedious, unengaging prizefights staged in recent or distant memory. Somewhat thankfully, the greater blame has been saddled upon Stevenson’s shoulders. At the end of the day however, De Los Santos did obtain the attention and awareness of a whole new set of eyeballs.
For his part, Russell is still trying to break into the upper tier of competition and notoriety in the division. To date, Gary Antuanne Russell has more than shown his worth and ability in the ring. When going head to head with established veterans such as Viktor Postol and Rances Barthelemy, Russell shined in both instances. In fact, Russell stopped both before the final bell. Nevertheless, detractors will be quick to say Postol and Barthelemy had more miles than Sean Combs currently has diss tweets flying around at the time of the fight.
BACK TO THE BRICKS
If the two heavy-hitters do actually link up, then this should make for one explosive battle! Not only does the #2 (WBC) ranked Russell have a perfect record, he also has stopped every professional foe he’s faced. Meanwhile, despite his two losses, De Los Santos maintains an 88% knockout ratio. On top of those impressive details, this would be a must-win for each man.
Naturally, Russell wants to maintain his undefeated record as well as continue his upward mobility in regards to his public presence. Likewise, Edwin De Los Santos can hardly stand back-to-back losses or another dreadful performance. So let’s see if this duel is actually announced or remains arrested in the land of make-believe.
