Will Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos fight in Australia?
Unified lightweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (16-0, 12ko) could be defending his titles in the backyard of IBF mandatory challenger “Ferocious” George Kambosos Jr (19-0, 10ko).
Now this story just got very interesting. Lopez issued a warning to his arch-rival WBC champion Devin “The Dream” Haney earlier this year. He wanted the WBC champion to be ready in case things go south with trying to fulfill his mandatory obligation.
Team Lopez believed that in wake of the current pandemic, the travel ban in Australia puts a serious hamper on making the fight. Regardless of The Takeover’s willingness to travel, giving his mandatory home-field advantage.
Kambosos was paying very close attention to everything and apparently isn’t willing to just sit this one out. Taking to social media reminding the Brooklyn, New York native he is not stepping aside.
“Too much bullshit floating around! The word MANDATORY is sweet. You got to see me, boy!! Or say bye-bye to the belt.”
George Kambosos Jr – IBF Lightweight Mandatory Challenger
During an interview with SiriusXM boxing show “At The Fights”, manager Peter Kahn’s statement supported the tweet by Kambosos and expressed how this fight could be heading to “The Land Down Under.”
“We are getting close. George Kambosos is the mandatory for Teofimo Lopez and we have a formal proposal to Top Rank that will express our offer to bring him to Australia to defend all of his titles against George who earned it.
“George is the only mandatory for Teofimo! He’s the only mandatory and right now he is up. And if Teofimo accepts they will bring those belts Down Under (Australia). If not he has to vacate the belt and George will fight for the vacated title.”
Peter Kahn – Manager for Gearoge Kambosos Jr
The undefeated Australian fighter is feeling pretty confident as it may seem that the trap has been set for the unified champion. Furthermore, he took to social media once again to deliver a message to the unified champion.
Of course, The Takeover is never shy of clapping back responded like a champion should, in a way that could be a sign that he will accept the offer.
