Gervonta Davis stops Hugo Ruiz in one

The build up to this fight was full of drama. Gervonta Davis was originally slated to fight ring veteran and former three division world champion Abner Mares. Unfortunately, Mares suffered a detached retina in training.

To save the event, enter Hugo Ruiz (39-4, 33KOs) as he takes the opportunity to face a rising star in Davis. The drama would continue as Davis would miss weight by 0.2 pounds. However, he would make the weight within the allotted thirty minutes.

Ruiz, who’s on a three-fight winning streak, is moving up from featherweight and is looking to make a name for himself. As a former champion, Ruiz won’t be blinded by the bright lights of the big stage.

To start the event, it was evident that Davis is looking to raise his profile as he entered the ring to Michael Jackson’s Thriller in what was an entertaining entrance.

Both fighters started the fight as expected. Davis mans the center of the ring and Ruiz starts on his back foot. Davis showed his trademark accuracy and power, landing both his jab and straight left.

Halfway through the round, the champion lands a three-punch combination, sending Ruiz down and out. Davis looked exactly how he should in a showcase fight.

Hopefully, we get a unification bout with IBF champion Tevin Farmer. In the meantime, he will have to face the winner of Ricardo Nunez vs Edner Cherry on March 2.

For fans in the know, Edner Cherry would be an interesting match-up.
