Shakhram Giyasov Wants a Welterweight Title
To open his 2025 boxing calendar, #1 (WBA) and #7 (WBO) ranked welterweight Shakhram Giyasov (17-0, 10 KO’s) steamed rolled Franco “Cazador” Ocampo (17-3, 8 KO’s). Giyasov pulled this off by thoroughly dominating his foe, punctuated by dropping him in the first and stopping him in the fourth with a single body shot.
Animated by the tragic recent death of his two-year-old daughter, Giyasov got emotional during his post-fight interview when questioned about his fallen child. Giyasov revealed that he promised his daughter that he’d be a world champion. With his WBA standing, he is in a very realistic position to make a serious run at fulfilling this oath.
“I promised her I will be world champion! It’s a fight for my daughter – I promised for my daughter I would be a world champion. She believed me, I did it. I know this – give me chance, I do it.”
Unfortunately for him though, Giyasov may have a wait on his hands. This is because his standing gives him an earned shot at Eimantas Stanionis who will face Jaron Ennis in his next contest. The Ennis versus Stanionis bout is also a unification match. This is notable because there is likely to be a rematch clause included, which would naturally delay any opportunity for Giyasov to schedule a dance date.
Even if there is no rematch clause, the winner, then a unified champion, would probably have their mind set on capturing another world title. And so long as either champion Brian Norman Jr. (WBO) or Mario Barrios (WBC) sign on the dotted line, those unification would take precedence. This would, once again, leave him buffing pine waiting to get in the game.
