Golovkin vs Derevyanchenko

Former unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin will square off against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Everybody by now should already know how this story has been playing out. In case you don’t, here is a quick synopsis of the past events.

Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s mega-star, received orders to face the Ukraine fighter. After a deal failed to manifest between the two camps, the IBF would strip away the title. As reported by 3kingsboxing the IBF intended to order the next two available fighters to compete for the vacant title. This would result in the ordering of Golovkin facing Derevyanchenko back on August 5.

CURRENT STATE OF AFFAIRS

This brings us to the current news. The two teams have reached an agreement and the fight is now set to take place October 5 at the famous Madison Square Garden Arena. Both combatants have very good incentives to want to win this fight.

Golovkin, besides wanting to be a champion again, is seeking to avenge his only professional loss to the Mexican superstar, along with another huge payday.

Derevyanchenko attempted to capture his first world title, but suffered his first career defeat against Daniel Jacobs in 2018. This will be his second attempt at the IBF title, this time hoping for a different result.

Ironically, this was a fight that team Derevyanchenko was campaigning for May 2018, back when a replacement fighter was being looked for during the PED debacle. This fight between the two men has some deep history behind it, and you better believe there will be fireworks on fight night.

Will the older former unified champion reclaim what was once in his previous possession? Perhaps the younger challenger will cash in on a huge opportunity in a fight he has been wanting. This brings to mind the old phrase “Be careful for what you wish for”.
