Gennady Golovkin-Jaime Munguia possible for the fall!
It seems that Gennady Golovkin could still be facing a Mexican champion, just not the one he wants.3kingsboxing.com has learned WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia is a strong possibility to face the former middleweight champion this fall.
This shouldn’t come as a major surprise since last May, the then-unknown Mexican contender was called for a fight with Golovkin in the aftermath of Canelo Alvarez testing positive for Clenbutoral. That left HBO and Tom Loeffler scrambling to find a last minute replacement.
The two names in the running were longtime junior middleweight contender Vanes Martiroysian and then-unknown Jaime Munguia.
It appeared that Munguia would indeed get the nod. However, the Nevada State Athletic Commission denied to license him, feeling he lacked enough experience. Munguia would go on to defeat Sadam Ali to become the WBO junior middleweight champion and successfully defend his title four consecutive times.
Meanwhile, its been no secret he intends to move up in weight by 2020.
Now with Alvarez-Golovkin 3 in limbo, a move up in weight for Munguia may come sooner. This all hinges on Canelo Alvarez ‘s next move, which is expected possibly as soon as early July.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as they become available.
