The IBF orders Gennady Golovkin vs Sergiy Dervevychenko!
3kingsboxing.com can confirm that after speaking to a representative for the IBF, Gennady Golovkin and Sergiy Dervevychenko have been ordered to fight for the vacant title recently stripped from former unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
Ironically, Golovkin was stripped of this same title in 2018 for attempting to bypass the same mandatory challenger after Alvarez failed a drug test for their May 5 rematch. Instead, he would go on to face junior middleweight Vanes Martirosyan which prompted the IBF to relieve him of the title.
However, this ordering was highly expected as the next move after reviewing the current rankings.
At one point, both men were under consideration as a possible opponent for Alvarez in the fall. However, with the Mexican star seemingly unable to decide on an opponent of his liking, the organization jumped in and made the decision to strip him after failed negotiations with the mandatory challenger.
Both sides have thirty days to come to an agreement and avoid a purse that’s scheduled for September 4.
Lou Dibella, who promotes Dervevychenko, has already announced that negotiations with team Golovkin have been taking place with a deal expected shortly.
If a deal gets done as expected, the fight will likely take place in October with New York as the destination for the fight.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
