Golovkin vs Saunders: The Right Fight at The Right Time

A chance for all the belts and solidify a legacy

Can Billy Joe Saunders and Gennady Golovkin finally meet in the ring? Frank Warren has publicly asked for Tom Loeffer, the promoter of Golovkin, to call him if they are for real about making a fight between Golovkin and Saunders for the chance to become undisputed middleweight world champion.

Golovkin is fresh of an easy night of work against Vanes Martirosyan and was given an exception by IBF under the pretense that he faces his mandatory challenger, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, by August 3rd. Golovkin however has appealed the exception in hopes to perhaps try to get another fight with Canelo Alvarez in September. However, he should remain leery that perhaps Golden Boy may have different plans.

If Golovkin does not win his appeal, there is one way he can bypass the rules and get a decent payday, while at it. That is to go for a unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders, by IBF rules the bout would be allowed with no worries of a mandatory. Golovkin and his team must put all their cards on the table and think which way to go; solidify his legacy or go for the payday?

Saunders has been vocal about wanting to fight Golovkin but first he must take care of business, as he has a scheduled bout on June 23rd against Martin Murray. It’s a bout that Saunders should win comfortably. Hopefully, afterwards Warren and Loeffler can talk business and as long as they can agree on money, then we should have a fight. It’s the right time for the bout, especially after Alvarez failed his drug test.

A battle for the all the belts and to be looked at as the man that reigns supreme in the division, should be enticing for Saunders. A chance to get a career defining win. For Golovkin it would solidify his legacy as perhaps one of the best middleweights of all time. Golovkin go for the glory!!
