Yoelvis Gomez Stays Undefeated After Dominating Jorge Cota

Cuban import and rising super welterweight contender Yoelvis “La Joya” Gomez (6-0, 5 KO’s) continued to impress in his latest prizefight. When pit against the much more professionally experienced Jorge “Demonio” Cota (30-5, 27 KO’s), Gomez soundly defeated him by way of unanimous decision. With the win, La Joya kept his flawless record intact. Unfortunately for him though, the win came at the expensive of his knockout streak.

Clearly, it’s time for Team Cota to go back to the drawing board to contemplate his next move with great care. On the flip side, the future could not look brighter for the heavy-handed Cuban who is ranked #5 (WBA). Let’s see how he follows this exciting win up.

FULL STEAM AHEAD

Prior to the match, Cota expressed his belief that he felt disrespected by facing a fighter with such little professional experience. In the first round however, his superior experience did not help him at all. In fact, he spent the majority of the round just trying to get out of Gomez’s way. For his part, La Joya was apparently trying to knock Cota’s spleen out his ear given how hard his punches were being thrown.

Cota spent the first two rounds in just about naked retreat and he ended both periods being hammered against the ropes in the corner. Demonio looked like his night was over briefly in the third after Gomez blasted him with a tight right hook that left him sprawling into the ropes. When the fighters came together moments later, La Joya shoved him to the ground. Referee Wes Melta admonished him for the tactic and the bout marched on.

ONE-MAN SHOW

Seeming to realize he was not going to run Cota over with brute aggression, Gomez dropped his activity level a great deal. From the outside looking in, it appeared that he was trying to bait Demonio into throwing first so that he could counter. As the action remained slow through the sixth, it was becoming more apparent that outside of his big power shots, Gomez did not have a plan B.

Despite his lack of versatility La Joya began punishing Cota with his power during the seventh and eighth rounds anew. During the eighth in particular, Gomez did great damage with a repeated right hook to the ribs. Cota spent the ninth on his bike. The tenth was another massively one-sided round for the undefeated Cuban. So, it was no surprise that when the cards were read, he won by way of 100-90 (three times).
