Gonzalez v Estrada Trilogy to be postponed

According to ESPN, via Matchroom Boxing Promoter Eddie Hearn, the much anticipated third bout between Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KO’s) and WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco “El Gato” Estrada (42-3, 28 KO’s) is going to be pushed back. This unfortunate news is the result of Gonzalez contracting COVID-19. After nearly completely crippling the sport of boxing for about a year, the nefarious ailment is still wreaking havoc on the sport. WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez and former world champion turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya have all recently postponed or cancelled fights after contracting the virus.

Gonzalez and Estrada initially tested their might and wits against one another back on November 17, 2012. Chocolatito would walk away with a UD win. They would stage their very violent and competitive rematch on March 13. This time, it was Estrada who would claim the hard-fought split decision win. Despite their losses to one another, both men have continued to make big noise in the sport.

Each are multi-division champions with Estrada capturing belts at light flyweight, flyweight and super flyweight. To his credit, Roman Gonzalez has been a champion in the minimum, light fly, fly and super flyweight divisions. It goes without saying that both of the competitors are extremely disappointed with the latest turn of events. Estrada is currently riding a six-fight win streak and was eager to cap this rivalry off with a second victory. At the moment, it is unclear when the bout will be rescheduled, although a date in November is being investigated. In any event, 3kingsboxing will be here to report the latest developments as they become available.
