Ryan Garcia Once Again Says the Fighter He Wants to Face More Than Anyone is Gervonta Davis
WBC ‘Interim’ World Lightweight champion Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) is currently in Miami, Florida. He is supporting his mentor and stablemate “Canelo” Alvarez, who is set to defend the WBA ‘Super’/WBC World Super Middleweight titles Avni Yildirim on February 27 at the Hard Rock Stadium live on DAZN.
Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) is currently in Miami, Florida. He is there to show support for his stablemate Canelo Alvarez, who will defend the WBA ‘Super’/WBC World 168-pound titles on February 27 at The Hard Rock Stadium live on DAZN. However, when you see Garcia, he is usually accompanied by the media cameras and microphones. Whatever you think of the 22-year-old from Los Angeles, he is one of the most popular and talked-about fighters in the sport.
He is among the talented young guns at 135 pounds along with unified IBF/WBA ‘Super’/WBO champion Teofimo Lopez, WBC champion Devin Haney, and WBA ‘Regular’ champion Gervonta Davis. Garcia and Tank particularly have talked and talked plenty about fighting each other. Unfortunately, all the back-and-forth has not resulted in an actual fight.
ONE MAN IN MIND
Of all the young guns at lightweight, the brash Garcia was emphatic in his desire. He explained during an interview with iFL TV.
“I’m ready to go fight Gervonta Davis, that’s what the people want. You heard me ask the people, ‘who do you want me to fight?’ They all made it clear it was Gervonta Davis.”
As the WBC ‘interim’ champion, Garcia is in line to fight Devin Haney. However, he said a fight against Haney does not excite him. He is more motivated by Davis and Lopez. Defeating them would prove he is the best in the division. In his opinion, Haney has yet to step up to the plate and fight anyone significant in their prime.
Some would argue that until his most recent fight, a 7th round stoppage victory over Luke Campbell in January 2021, Garcia’s resume has been rather empty. Also, there is an opportunity to face Haney. Why not take it?
However, the popular Los Angelino seems hell-bent on fighting one fighter. In his mind, all roads lead to a showdown against Davis. If they eventually step in the right with each other, Garcia has a bold prediction on how it would fare.
“That’s just been how the stars are aligning. Everybody has wanted me to fight Gervonta Davis for so long now. He’s a knockout puncher, he’s got everybody excited.
But I see something where I’ll knock him out in two rounds, maybe less. The only reason he will get to two is because I will let him get to two. I’ll let him get up and continue the round, go to the second round, and knock him out.”
Bold words, from a very bold kid. Boxing fans would love for Garcia v Davis to eventually become a reality.
