Jonathan Gonzalez Likes his Chances Against Hiroto Kyoguchi

WBO junior flyweight Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez (25-3-1-1, 14KOs) will make the first defense of his title on June 24 against Mark Anthony Barriga (11-1, 2KOs) in Kissimmee, Florida. Last October, Bomba dethroned the then-reigning WBO 108-pound champion, Elwin Soto (19-2, 13KOs), with a split decision victory.

While his focus is solely on Barriga, the Puerto Rican does have bigger aspirations he would like to accomplish assuming he’s victorious on June 24.

Speaking to Boxing Social, he was asked if a unification fight with WBA 108-pound champion Hiroto Kyoguchi (16-0, 11KOs) is a fight he’s interested in. Kyoguchi is coming off yet another impressive victory against Esteban Bermudez, stopping him in eight rounds. He had the following to say:

On Kyoguchi’s last performance:

“I tuned in late. I saw it on DAZN. He looked great, he looked strong. That’s the style that I like. The fighters that come to me, and those are the fighters I can dominate.”

On unifying with Kyoguchi:

“I would love to fight. One thing you have to clear up; Right now I have two fights contracted […] The other one […] is not with a world champion. It is with a world-ranked challenger. It’s got to be a better offer, you know.

I know Matchroom is their promoter, but we have not received no offer. They told the press that they have received an offer to fight me, but my promoter and me have not received any offer. I have two fights in a contract. If that’s a better offer, maybe we can look it up. But right now, I’m getting good pay for my two fights; I’ve got to get a better offer.”

So while it seems as though Bomba is down to lock horns, the business side has to be beneficial for him. However, with both men open to fighting each other, you’d assume a deal could be struck for a pivotal unification bout at junior flyweight to happen.
