Christina Hammer makes her long-awaited return
Former unified female middleweight champion Christina Hammer (23-0, 10KO) will return to the ring in a Germany against Elene Sikmashvili (8-7, 4KO).
Hammer was on a collision course to face undefeated unified champion Claressa Shields to crown only the second active undisputed women fighter. The two would trade words over social media and in the ring as both were eager to prove who is the best in the division.
The two had had gotten so far as to a scheduled bout for November 17, 2018. Then unfortunately, reports surfaced that Hammer would have to pull out of the fight due to an injury with an expected return for March.
However, Hammer didn’t suffer an injury. It was a serious medical condition that would keep her from competing against Shields. Because of this unfortunate circumstance, the WBC placed her as a “champion in recess.” As a result, Shields would go on to face Hannah Rankin for the vacant title.
As a champion in recess, Hammer has the right to be the mandatory for the title Shields would win against Rankin. This fight signifies she has made a full recovery, though there are questions that remain. Fans are hoping to see a mega fight with Shields soon.
