Haney Fighting in the Garden

On Friday September 13, 2o-year old Devin “The Dream” Haney gets to check one more item off his bucket list. He will accomplish this by not only fighting at, but headlining in the iconic Madison Square Garden. There, he will combat the Russian boxer Zaur Abdullaev for the interim WBC world lightweight title. The entire fight card will air live on the DAZN app.

The bout with Abdullaev will mark his third of year, which is one more than the Dream fought in 2018. Haney’s next bout is of notable significance being that he can walk away the WBC interim lightweight champion. Of note, Mikey Garcia vacated the official title earlier this year. So, it’s very likely that, if victorious, Haney would be anointed the legitimate champion shortly thereafter.

A DREAM COME TRUE

The thrill of being this close to becoming a legitimate world champion is enhanced by the opportunity to win inside of MSG. As a youth coming up in the game, the Dream fantasized about one day battling in the historic structure. He was faithful that he’d make it there someday. However, he never fathomed that it would come so quickly.

“This means so much for me, you know, this is a dream come true. I never thought that I fight at Madison Square Garden, you know, this early. I didn’t think it would come this fast, but you know, everything happens for a reason.” ~Devin Haney

If Haney becomes the interim, and ultimately regular world champion, he will certainly try to secure unifying fights with the other lightweight champions Vasiliy Lomachenko (WBO and WBA) and Richard Commey (IBF). Although, Lou DiBella promoted Richard Commey is slated to face Teofimo Lopez on December 14 according to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. Arum also indicated that the winner of Commey v Lopez, who also fight in MSG, would then fight Lomachenko first quarter of 2020. Both Lopez and Lomachenko reside in the Top Rank stable.

If all these announcements come to fruition, Haney might have a little wait to face another champion. In any event, 3kingsboxing will stay on top of the latest developments and provide the most up to date boxing news.
