Proposed Devin Haney v George Kambosos Undisputed Lightweight Battle Could Head to Australia!
Although he has some business to handle before he can look forward to greener pastures, WBC lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (26-0, 15KOs) is on record stating that he’s open to traveling down under to Australia to tangle with newly crowned unified lightweight champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos (20-0, 10KOs).
Such a fight would crown an undisputed lightweight champion, something Haney has angled for since becoming the WBC champion. With Lopez being unseated as the number one fighter in the division, all eyes have been placed solely on Haney and Kambosos. The unlikely undisputed showdown is now the main focus. Should Haney get past former IBF junior lightweight champion Jo Jo Diaz on December 4, the pressure will be immense on both men to get a deal done.
While everything is still fluid, questions are already being asked of where the fight could take place. Would it be held in the US or in Kambosos’ backyard of Australia? Regardless, Haney seems open to traveling aboard to accomplish the goal of becoming the undisputed lightweight champion.
He told Boxing Social the following:
“I’m open to doing a lot of things, but it all starts Saturday night. I need to go in there and win and that’s what I will do. I will not look passed Jo Jo Diaz at all. There’s a lot at stake, but my main focus right now is Jo Jo Diaz. After Saturday, when I become victorious, we can talk about it then.”
Haney is right. His main focus should be on Diaz. Jo Jo alone stands in his way for an opportunity to compete for lightweight supremacy. To add to that is we all just witnessed what happens when a fighter is focused on everything but his opponent.
Unlike Lopez, Haney isn’t looking to drop the ball by overlooking a very formidable former champion in Diaz.
