Devin Haney returns in September according to Eddie Hearn.
Although Devin Haney is currently ranked in the top 10 in all four sanctioning bodies, many still consider him as a prospect. However after this year, he should be on his way to shedding the prospect label and becoming a full-fledged contender!
Matchroom head honcho Eddie Hearn told the media that Haney’s next bout is tentatively scheduled for September. We expect the details of the bout to be announced the week of June 10.
It should be noted that the WBC has ordered a final eliminator between Haney and Russian prospect Zaur Abdullev. The winner of that bout would become mandatory to the winner of the upcoming bout between Vasyl Lomachenko and Luke Campbell for the vacant WBC lightweight title. Lomachenko’s WBO and WBA versions of the title will also be on the line.
Also of note, just because the WBC ordered that bout doesn’t mean Haney or Abdullev have to comply. We saw this recently when the WBC’s original plans at lightweight to have a tournament that would’ve featured Haney, Abdullev, and super prospect Teofimo Lopez were nixed, as Lopez’s promoter, Bob Arum opted to take his fighter in a different route.
Something similar could happen with Haney, although it remains to be seen. The youngster dazzled in his last showing on May 25 against Antonio Moran. Moran was supposed to give Haney a stern test. Instead, he was on the receiving end of a highlight reel knockout.
If I were a betting man, I would bet on the 21 year-old going ahead with the eliminator with Abdullev, who is a solid prospect in his own right. However, make no mistake about Haney. He is young and has options. Regardless of what Hearn has in store for his up-and-comer one thing is for sure, we will be watching!
