Devin Haney says Richard Commey could be next

For WBC World lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (26-0, 15 KO’s), his tenure as a champion has not been easy. It has not been an issue of staging grueling back-to-back fights, though. Actually, it’s been quite the opposite. The Dream has struggled finding a great opponent the same way a dwarf with bad knees would struggle at a slam dunk contest. Despite repeatedly calling out all the premiere names in the division, none of the truly big fish have bitten the line.

This is not to say that no one has shown interest. Former IBF lightweight champion Richard “RC” Commey (30-3, 27 KO’s) has publicly called Haney out via social media. While the Ghanaian is not at the top of his wish list, The Dream would be more than happy to match wits with him. Aside from being ranked #6 (WBO), #6 (WBC) and #12 (IBF), RC is an exciting fighter with a well-recognized name. Therefore, Haney would garner genuine credibility if he could stop or thoroughly outclass him.

BUT I GOT THE BELT!!!

In a recent interview with Fight Hype, The Dream explained how currently Commey is leading the pack of would-be next foes. The only potential hiccup is the that team Commey is in talks with Vasiliy Lomachenko’s team to put a bout together. Yet, Haney is optimistic that RC sees the greater advantage in staging a showdown with him.

“We know that Richard Commey is interested in fighting Loma [Vasiliy Lomachenko]. The deal is not signed yet but we know they are in talks. But in reality, he would get a title shot and make more money by fighting me, so we just got to see.”

“He called me out on social media, I didn’t even see it until some days later. It didn’t get a lot of buzz, so I didn’t see it. So, he calls me out, my dad reached out to Lou DiBella, Lou DiBella said, ‘we are looking at a Lomachenko fight, we haven’t got an official offer yet so we are looking at a Lomachenko fight.’

So, I mean we’ll see but we presented it to Lou DiBella. You know, we haven’t sent an official offer yet or anything like that but we did present it to him to see if they were interested. They did say that they might be interested, they didn’t they were officially interested, so we just got to see.”

With all these moving parts, it will be intriguing to see who Haney can secure a fight with next. Let’s just hope that it’s a good one! Yet, regardless of who The Dream dances with next, 3kingsboxing will be there to report all the gory details!
