Team Michael Williams Jr Axes Roy Jones Jr Over Broken Jaw

Michael “Boy Wonder” Williams Jr (20-1, 13KO) has suffered an injury while sparring ahead of the upcoming bout with multi-divisional champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (34-4-1, 24KO). Team Williams is laying the blame on head trainer Roy Jones Jr and has cut ties with him.

On January 26, the boxing community learned Williams Jr was picked to step in for “Hammering” Hank Lundy as Broner’s comeback fight on February 25. However, Williams Jr suffered a broken jaw in preparation. Boy Wonder’s father, Michael Williams Sr., took to social media with an eyebrow raising post.

3kingboxing.com spoke with Williams Sr, who was frustrated and disappointed over the situation. He believes that Jones Jr’s priorities were misplaced.

“Roy (Jones) was more worried about his brand than the safety of my son, Michael Williams Jr, and the importance of this fight.”

Williams Sr feels there was no reason for his son to be doing hard sparring one week out before fight night. Furthermore, he believes Jones Jr. was overdoing things in camp due to receiving heavy criticism after Chris Eubank Jr’s stoppage defeat against Liam Smith on January 21.

Team Williams hopes the fight gets postponed in order to give the Boy Wonder time to heal. There must be a curse surrounding Broner. This now marks the third opponent that had to bow-out of the multi-divisional champ’s return. As Williams Sr. stated, hopefully this fight gets rescheduled.
