Hearn on Loma Being a Superstar: “I Can’t Put Him In That Category!”

Barry Hearn believes the “hype” surrounding Vasiliy Lomachenko is unwarranted!

Immediately following Vasyl Lomachenko’s victory over Luke Campbell, Barry Hearn (who’s prone to controversial statements) gave his take on the three division and current unified champion’s performance.

To put it succinctly, he wasn’t impressed and expressed this in a recent interview with iFL TV.

“I was slightly disappointed in Lomachenko to be honest with you. They hype him up as this superstar, but I can’t put him in that same category of superstars of yester-year on that performance.

“Great fighter obviously. We can’t mention him among the all time greats. He’s some ways away from that.”

Hearn also stated why this performance left him unimpressed.

“I wasn’t particularly impressed. I thought he had Campbell hurt a couple of times and couldn’t finish the job. I thought he coasted a few rounds. I didn’t see the dynamic fighter we’ve built ourselves up to believe he is. He’s obviously very good, but we’re talking about legendary status type of fighter.”

The head of Matchroom Sports might not be alone in his opinion. Immediately following the fight, Gervonta “Tank” Davis vacated his WBA junior lightweight title to make the move to lightweight.

Devin Haney who it was originally believed would fight Luke Campbell for the vacant WBC strap, took to social media and kept it short and to the point:

“I’d beat Lomachenko point blank.”

It appears while most media experts and pundits rank the Ukrainian superstar as the Pound-For-Pound #1 fighter, there’s now a contingent of fighters who disagree. Where do you rank Lomachenko, and is he sitting on boxing’s top spot?
