Eddie Hearn ready to award Joshua Buatsi a title fight, if victorious
DAZN/Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is always on the lookout to take fighters to the next level and put them in the position to fight for a championship. Hence, fans should not be surprised he is looking to do the same with undefeated fighters WBA ‘Super’ Light Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and WBA #2 contender Joshua Buatsi.
The WBA champion is one of those underrated champions that fans barely speak on. Although boxing enthusiasts can appreciate his supreme boxing skills, it is his lackluster performances that even they find hard to swallow at times. However, he has dispatched every opponent with relative ease despite often fighting in cruise control.
Bivol almost cost himself the title with another uneventful performance in his last outing against #5 ranked Craig Richards back on May 1. Two of the judges scored it razor close at 115-113, 115-114, and the final judge saw it 118-110. Hopefully, this is a sign to the champion that he will need to push the envelope in his next fight.
BUATSI ADDS NEW TRAINER AFTER TOUGH STEP UP FIGHT
Buatsi could be that fighter to bring out the aggressiveness in the WBA champion. However, he first must get past another big test in undefeated fighter Daniel Dos Santos. The #2 ranked fighter has added championship pedigree to his camp with well-known trainer Virgil Hunter. Hunter was the watchful eye over pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward’s career.
The WBA International titlist from Ghana had to dig deep against a game opponent in Marko Calic back on October 2020. It was after that fight he decided to make a change. Realizing he cannot always count on power, he quickly packed his bags and headed towards the Untied States to the gym of Hunter.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT IS THERE FOR THE TAKING
During an interview with Sky Sports, Hearn expressed wanting to make a title fight between Bivol and Buatsi. That is, providing the Ghanaian fighter is successful against Dos Santos.
“I think he (Buatsi) is on the verge. You saw Craig Richards fight Dmitry Bivol recently. He put up a great performance, which fancies Joshua Buatsi’s chances against Dmitry Bivol. I think it is a fantastic fight. He’s just teamed up with Virgil Hunter, so this is going to be interesting to see the improvements he has made.”
“I think Joshua Buatsi is a real standout star in British boxing, and I see him going to fight for a world title this year, but he needs to get through Saturday… Buatsi had a tough fight out against Calic last time behind closed doors. This time, new trainer, new strategy, let’s see if he’s ready to go get the win and move on to fight for the world title.”
With the championship title fight within arm’s reach, Buatsi will be putting everything on the line live on DAZN at the Manchester Arena, Manchester May 15.
