Billy Joe Saunders Could Face Callum Smith
Matchroom boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that a fight between undefeated super-middleweight champions Billy Joe Saunders (WBO) and Callum Smith (WBC) is a possiblity.
In a Fighthype interview, the British promoter expressed the idea of the fight.
“Billy Joe signed for that on his contract. I can make that fight once Callum agrees to it. I want Callum to fight next month and like Joe said, if he [Smith] is getting these big offers, he gotta look at them and see if there is a better route for him to go.”
Now Ironically, this was a fight that rival British promoter Frank Warren was trying make earlier in 2019.
This was back when the WBO champion was under the Queensbury umbrella. Saunders recently signed with Hearn after an amicable departure from Queensbury, and has expressed wanting a big fight.
Smith also expressed wanting a big name fight. At one point, a fight with boxing’s mega star WBA middleweght champion Canelo Alvarez was a consideration.
Since winning the World Boxing Super Series tournament, his career hasn’t exactly taken off the way that team Smith had hoped.
LOOKING FORWARD
When surveying the landscape at the super-middleweight division, this fight would serve justice and financial gain for both men.
The winner will undoubtedly be considered the top dog of the division, being a unified champion. Not to mention the “UK bragging rights” promotional angle would have the fans in a frenzy.
Both men are very skillful and technically sound. Breaking down a fight like this is enjoyable to boxing purists.
3kingsboxing will continue to monitor this situation for further development.
