Eddie Hearn Confident In Making Joshua – Fury In 2021

There has been much scuttlebutt taken about the possibility of a heavyweight unification showdown between IBF/WBO/WBA “Super” World Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (23-1, 21 KOs) and WBC Heavyweight titleholder Tyson Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs).

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has openly talked about staging a fight between the two big men for 2021. During a live virtual discussion with ITV, Hearn was asked about comments during a May 15 interview with Sky Sports about Joshua and Fury fighting in 2021.

The Matchroom Boxing CEO didn’t quell down the hot talk. He expanded on a plan to put the two in the ring.

“I think what this has shown is that you have to take opportunities when they are there. I’m pretty sure Tyson Fury is thinking, ‘I need to make sure to get these AJ fights because that’s the defining fight of my career’. Financially, that will set up many generations of his family.

I know from AJ’s side, he’s desperate to fight Tyson Fury. We know that Fury’s gotta fight Wilder and we know that AJ is going to fight Pulev. We know that Wilder won’t step aside. So, there’s no point in discussing that fight (Joshua – Fury) this year.

We just gotta get those fights out of the way and also, start negotiations. Everyone’s on the same page to make those fights for 2021. Two fights, simple and I’m confident that we’ll get it.”

So while Hearn acknowledges that both his fighter Joshua, as well as Fury, has business to take care of, he’s making it clear that if everything comes together, all roads lead to not just one, but two fights between Joshua and Fury next year!

This is what you call boxing’s version of a long-term strategy. And be clear, the other factor is not only the cooperation of the WBC world Heavyweight champ, but also his promoter, Bob Arum who will have a major say-so, no doubt about it.

However, if all this comes about, a fight between the two would be arguably the biggest fight ever for the UK. Also, it would be a true super-fight, the biggest bout that could happen in the sport right now. Stay tuned to 3KingsBoxing as we follow this evolving development
