Eddie Hearn says no negotations happening for Joshua-Fury
Promoter Eddie Hearn has come out to debunk news of unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury starting negotiations for a potential undisputed heavyweight title clash.
It was reported by ESPN that talks had begun for the heavyweight mega fight. However that’s not the case.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Hearn had the following to say on the matter.
“Well I think last night again, a call from ESPN asking me that sources tell them that negotiations are underway, and I just told them look, definitely negotiations aren’t underway. That’s the first thing. We have a contract to fight Kubrat Pulev next, Tyson Fury has a contract to fight Deontay Wilder next.
Obviously with everything that’s happening, there is I believe keenness from the sides of Anthony Joshua and our team and keenness from the sides of Tyson Fury and his team to potentially go straight into that fight. There is, like I said, the major hurdle of we’re both being under contract for other fights. So firstly, there’s no negotiations that have taken place and those negotiations can’t take place until we know that Deontay Wilder will step aside and Kurbat Pulev will step aside.
Everything is solvable with money. What has been happening is that we’ve had a number of approaches from territories asking and inquiring and making offers to stage that fight.”
BARRIERS TO BATTLE
Obviously a Joshua-Fury fight is the preference, as it means much more than their upcoming individual fights. However, a contract is a contract and that must be honored. Still, if they’re able to strike deals with both Wilder and Pulev to step aside then the fight would likely move forward. That’s a big if!
There’s so many variables in this situation that it seems likely that this fight won’t take place until 2021. Even then, that’s if both men win their upcoming fights and the COVID-19 pandemic comes under control.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
