Eduardo Hernandez Destroys Jorge Castaneda; Seeks to Avenge Loss to Gutierrez
A key battle of hungry junior lightweights took place at the Domo Alcalde in Guadalajara, Mexico as Jorge Castaneda (15-2, 11 KOs) took on Eduardo Hernandez (32-1, 29 KOs) in a ten-round contest.
Castenada came into this one coming off what was arguably the biggest win of his career. In October 2021, the 25-year-old from Laredo, Texas traveled to Greenwich, England, and scored a ten-round majority decision win over Youssef Khoumari to claim the WBC International Silver 130-pound title.
The goal was to continue the wave of momentum into what was behind enemy lines against Hernandez, who was fighting in his home country of Mexico. Hernandez has bounced back nicely from a devastating first-round knockout to the current WBA “regular” junior lightweight champ Roger Gutierrez in July 2019. Stopping his last three opponents since that setback, the 24-year-old from Mexico City, Mexico is currently ranked ninth by the WBC and tenth by the WBA.
POWER DISPLAY
Spurred on by the home crowd, Hernandez roared out the opening bell like his hair was on fire. Not messing around, he poured on the power punches. A minute into the opening bell, a left hook put Castaneda on the seat of his pants. Castaneda was hurt, and Hernandez pounced. A series of overhand rights and left hooks from Hernandez finished had Castaneda reeling and wavering in the breeze. At this point, the referee correctly stepped in and waved the fight over just ninety-five seconds into the opening round!
It was an eye-opening, spectacular performance by the victor, who came in and emphatically took care of business. Afterward, he said he wants to avenge the only defeat of his career against Gutierrez.
