Hernandez wins split decision over Garza


On ShowBox: The Next Generation in a 10 round super bantamweight Jesse Hernandez improved to 11-1-1ND with 7 KOs defeating Ernesto Garza (9-3, 5 KOs) by split decision.

In the first round both guys threw punches in bunches combining for about 170 punches in a very close round. In the second round Hernandez did himself no favors by not using his reach and ended up getting caught with a short shot the knocked him down.

In the third round Hernandez came out with a sense of urgency staying long to midrange and landing some big power punches. In the fourth and fifth both men traded shots, fighting at a high pace as the fight seemed be shaping up to be as a battle of attrition.

Both guys showed a tremendous amount of heart and will but in the sixth round Hernandez seemed to try impose his will on Garza landing a big shot the made Garza’s mouthpiece fly. In the seventh round Hernandez seemed to fresher fighter as Garza seemed tired but game. Garza again would drop his mouthpiece causing the referee to give him a warning.

In the eight and ninth round Garza seemed to have gotten a second wind landing the more effective punches while using his movement to avoid punches coming back. In the tenth and final round it was anybody’s fight Hernandez came out imposing his will landing big power shots at the end of the round the seemed to stun Garza.

It was a fight where both guys showed a tremendous amount heart and toughness. The judges scorecards were 95-94 Hernandez, 95-93 Garza and 97-93 Hernandez.
